Construction Management Summer Intern

POSITION OBJECTIVE: FCL Builders is an employee-owned and operated industrial and commercial design builder and general contractor. We’re a full-service solutions provider, specializing in eCommerce, Manufacturing, Cold Storage, Data Centers, Warehousing and Distribution, Food Processing and Life Sciences. 

 

Our 10-week Internship Program has been designed to provide an overview of the industrial construction management process.  Students will work in several departments throughout the course of the internship including pre-construction, production, and field/superintendent. In conjunction with the rotation, FCL provides virtual training throughout the 10-weeks to gain professional development and bi-weekly mentorship meetings. 

 

10-WEEK PROGRAM POSITION OBJECTIVES:

PRE-CONSTRUCTION 

During this rotation, you will learn:

  • The proposal and budgeting preparation process
  • Basic pre-construction and estimating process
  • Design-build vs. plan-spec
  • An understanding of why we practice “Operational Excellence” and FCL procedures.
  • Drawing review
  • Conceptual estimating - design-build approach
  • Subcontractor scope review - bid clarification.
  • Quantity takeoffs
  • Detailed breakdowns/conversations - i.e. linear feet, square feet, square yards, cubic yards, etc.
  • The importance of subcontractor communication
    • Follow up and communication on bid
    • Scope questions - schedules, phases, project timing

PRODUCTION

During this rotation, you will learn:

  • Plan review - identify scopes
  • Bidding/buyout phase - bid analysis
    • Verify and update scope clarifications from estimating to current documents
  • Understanding the factors of qualification in selecting Subcontractors
  • Design-build subcontractors - MEP process
  • Permit submittal process (documents, applications)
  • Schedules - process, flow, durations: Realism with subcontractor feedback
  • Project documentation - Operational excellence
  • Closeout and closeout process

FIELD OPERATIONS

During this rotation, you will learn:

  • Drawing and plan reviews onsite
  • Onsite pre-construction meeting with trades
  • Job safety
    • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
    • Daily inspections
    • Audits
    • Safety walk reviews
  • Toolbox talks daily with subcontractors
  • Daily site review walks
  • Meeting minutes from subcontractor meetings
  • Document tracking - Operational excellence
  • Closeout and closeout process

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:

REQUIRED:

  • Enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Effective communicate communication skills
  • Mathematical skills, including application and use in problem solving.
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks

PREFERRED:

  • Knowledge in the following computer applications: Microsoft Office Applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CMIC, Bluebeam and Microsoft Project

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Mobility on and around construction sites and inside the office.
  • Works in inclement weather/high noise level at times during site visits.
  • Work at a desk or computer screen with keyboard for extended periods of time.
